Is there Benefits to Journaling?

Have you considered Journaling? Wait! Before your thoughts get in the way of, I don’t know how, or I don’t have the time or even why should I Journal consider this article.
Why should you Journal?
Journaling can have mental and emotional benefits, a way of releasing stress from your daily life. Journaling helps to process complex ideas and thoughts. Most of the time when you write down an idea then read it seconds or even minutes later the answer seems to pop off the page.

my journal
The beauty of journaling is that it helps you grow as a person, it can help you recognize patterns in your life as well as helps you gain perspective. As for me, at the end of the week, I like to scan through my journal to see how God secretly worked in my daily life for that week.
Journaling by hand in a paper notebook moves a different part of your brain than typing does. And before you argue that you can write faster on the computer, journaling is not about speed, efficiency, or volume. It’s about dedicating a few minutes each day to honor yourself, your thoughts and your feelings. Writing by hand helps you get in touch with all of that better than a keyboard.
Whether it’s putting pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard journaling can make a difference in your daily life.
However, you choose to keep your journal, there are clear benefits to doing it. In every case, they can be a huge benefit to you, personally, and enlightening for anyone you choose to share them with.
Journaling may seem a waste of time to a lot of people and time is something we can’t get back. I know that sounded negative but your time can be precious to someone else. I lost my mom several years ago and what I wouldn’t give to have the time back with her. One of the many reasons why I started to journal is for my son and for when he has children. By writing my thoughts, recording events, and the things I’ve through gives the person that reads what I have written a sense of what kind of person I am, my daily life and who I want to be. They can see the times I cried and the time that I laughed. It’s my legacy to the next generation.
Simple steps to Start Journaling
The easiest way to journal is by keeping it simple.

  • When starting your journal, just date the entry and note your location.
  • Start by describing your surroundings if you need to get warmed up.
  • Write a little bit about your day. What’s on your mind? Think of your journal like an old friend you’re sitting down to have coffee with. Just answer, “What’s up? What’s new? What’s going on?”

Happy Journaling

Chasing Your DREAMS!

Chasing your dreams can sometimes feel like when you watch fireworks during holidays, they seem to explode in our mind only to fizzle out when we don’t have the courage to chase them.
Do you have a burning desire to do something? Is there a dream that keeps coming up but you’re too afraid to step out into it?
Bravery is facing your fear and having the courage in taking steps regardless of how it feels. The word “courage,” is related to the French word “Coeur,” which means “heart.” Have you heard the phrase,” to take at heart?” If you take heart in something, you are encouraged and made to feel optimistic by it. Synonyms: be encouraged, be comforted, cheer up.
In this post, I’ll share some helpful tips in chasing your dream.
Remember, real bravery isn’t about fearlessness; it’s about taking steps in spite of it.
Courage is your fuel in achieving amazing success in life, follow/chase your dreams.
• If you’re a writer, you could be the next best-seller.
• If you’re a singer, you could be the next pop or country, etc. singer.
• If you’re an inventor, you could invent the next creation that could change the world.

Dreams are limitless. It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting. So, don’t limit your dreams, live them.

Chase Your Dreams! (3)

Can you remember when you were a child and you chased your friends in a game of tag or hiding seek? You would run as fast as you could to tag the person you were chasing so that they would be it. In other words, you chased the person for a purpose. When you chase something, for instance, your dreams, it is for a purpose and that purpose is to see the dream come to life.
Here is a story about a man that had the courage to continue when rejection seemed as cannon balls that targeted him. (Independence Day theme)
George Lucas spent four years sending the script for Star Wars around to various studios. After numerous rejections, he didn’t give up even when Universal Studios and United Artist both turned him down. Can you see the cannon balls? – Rejection.
Then finally, an executive from 20th Century Fox who had seen his American Graffiti film and been impressed by it decided to give him a chance with his Star Wars. The film was made for $11 million dollars and was released in 1977. Since then the original Star Wars trilogy has grossed over 2.4 billion dollars. If he’d let his negative inner voice get to him, he would never have ended up having the highest grossing film of all time. George Lucas had the courage to chase his dream.

What’s keeping you from chasing/pursuing your dream?
 Could it be fear?
 Could it be not knowing where to start?
 Could it be finances?
 Could it be doubt in achieving your dream?
It’s easy to talk yourself out of something, but face the fear, begin somewhere, invest in yourself little by little, and CRUSH doubt!
Steps in Chasing and living your Dream

1. Vision your dream
Think to yourself and imagine seeing yourself living your dream. Activate your imagination and see where you want to be.

2. Design your dream
Once you have a vision of your dream, build a blueprint of it on paper. Jot down an outline of ideas, and techniques.

3. Work your dream
Now that you have the vision and outline for your dream, you will need to work it. This is where you need to collaborate with all the tools and materials that you will need for the finished product – your dream.

4. Launch your dream
Now that you’ve seen your vision, planned it, worked it, it’s time to launch it. Launching your dream can be exciting and scary at the same time. An assortment of thoughts will bombard your mind some good others not so good. But believe in your dream. Believing is a vital part of your dream.

Freedom to DREAM!

4th of July

We celebrate July 4th as Independence Day. The quality or state of being independent.
The thirteen colonies declared themselves independent from Great Britain’s rule. They had, had enough of Britian’s taxation and declared to be free. Independence Day marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which established America as a country free from the rule of Great Britain. George Washington thought the Declaration was so important that he had it read to his troops on the parade grounds. The parade grounds were on New York’s Commons, which is very near today’s City Hall.
Have you ever wondered why humungous kaleidoscopes of gunpowder spray the night sky each Fourth of July? On the first Independence Day celebration, that was held in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, when the country was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War against Britain, the residents came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to boost morale.
Today, we gather with family and friends, have cookouts and barbeques with a day of festivities ending with fireworks to celebrate our freedom. We live in a land of freedom and home of the brave. Freedom to believe in One True God, bare arms, and follow our dreams. Dreams that we can choose to follow.
Have you considered your dream lately? The one you used to think about when you were a child, the one that flickers through your thoughts every now and then. If you haven’t, then when you nestle down staring at the sky on July 4th while watching the fireworks, let the sparks that ignite the night sky, spark your dream to life again. We have this great freedom to be whatever we choose so dream a dream and believe in it.

Happy Independence Day!

Author Conference Notes

Notes from the Author Conference at River of Life Church
I am Brenda Scruggs. I write contemporary/ historical fiction. My stories take the reader on travels of conflict and suspense with a flavor of romance. The characters I create are strong and determined while facing oppositions that could alter their way of life.
My newest series, Ladies of Entrepreneurship, The Ladies of this saga are Proverbs Thirty-One women. They are women who are business orientated, strong-willed and determined to live the dream that God has placed inside of them. You can follow these women of free enterprise and see how their story unfolds as God secretly works behind the scenes fashioning love together, healing wounds and bringing dreams to life.
Each novel can be read as a standalone book or as a historical saga.
I believe the written word can transport a person to a different time, places and where dreams can come true. It brings the imagination alive experiencing diverse emotion.
I may be telling my age, but I was coaxed into taking a journalism class in high school by the teacher. She saw something in me that I didn’t see. I say coaxed because I was very shy and to be a journalist you had to speak to people, but the teacher said there was more than just reporting and being in the spotlight. So, I took it the class doing what you would call today graphic design. I took the reports typed them and arranged them on paper using boarders and clipart for the school newspaper. Did I think years later than I would become and author? No, that never crossed my mind. But, God has a way of arranging his own plan in our lives. Now, I am writing books and doing my own book covers- graphic design.
There are different types of publishing.
1. Traditional where a publishing company accepts your books, produces and gets your books noticed. This one is a little harder because publishing houses have thousands of manuscripts to go through.
2. Self-publishing is where you go through a self-publishing company. They accept your book, produce it but you have a dollar amount that you pay for their services.
3. Independent Publishing is where you the Indie author does everything from start to finish. I am an Indie Author. Independent Publishing was the best for me whearas, one of the other may be best for you.
Yes. It can feel overwhelming sometimes when you first start out but with everything in business you have to learn the process. If this is the way you choose, again, say to yourself as I did, you can do this. I hear a lot of people say I don’t have the money or I don’t know what to do. I pull from the movie, Field of Dreams. “Build it and they will come.” I say, “write it and then it will be published.”
My advice for you right now is to pray and ask God what he would have you do. Then write your story. Get it down on paper. Habakkuk 2 Write the vision, and make it plain upon tablets, that he may run that reads it. 3For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Hey God, created the first Ipad. Ipads are known as tablets. He gives us witty inventions. Amen. Keep this scripture close and pull from its wisdom.

There are different genres. I will mention three since we have three authors here today.

1. Instructional/Inspirational I believe Mr. Alberts Amara, “The Undefiled Bed,” would fall under this genre.
2. Autobiography, I believe Mr. Dave Bannisters, “Sin for a season,” falls under this one.
3. Fictional Mine, Ladies of Entrepreneurship, falls under this genre. My stories are in a sense like parables where the reader is being told a story to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson.
I want to give you 5 key points that you can use in any talent whether it be writing, music, teaching, business and in general, everyday life.
1. Be determined and have faith. Determination is faiths best friend.
Faith without works is dead. Determination pushes you toward your goal. Determination is firmness of purpose and faith is having complete trust or confidence in. Everyone has a story to tell. If your sitting there, you have a story to tell whether it be a testimony of what God has done for you or an actual story to write but you don’t act on it by sharing with others by telling it or writing then you’re not prospering the kingdom of God. And what I mean by that is one of the definitions of prosper is to grow vigorously, to expand. By sharing your story, you are growing God’s kingdom plus it ignite something deep inside of you.
2. Learn. Learn your craft, your talent. Always strive to improve and build what you already know. There are tons of free videos out there to help you. All you have to do is invest in the time to watch and learn. God has given us a brain to use. Have you every heard you can learn whatever you put you mind to. That’s true. Whatever grabs your attention, your intellect will become curious pushing you to investigate deeper.
3. Seek Council Proverbs 15:22 – Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established. Always seek Gods face. When I wrote my first book, I told the lord what I wanted to do and bam the next thing I know, he downloaded three names and the plot.
Example: This is me seeking Council. Father, I need your council. I want to do this project, I name the project. What would you have, me to do and how do I do it. Then I wait. Now, with Ladies of Entrepreneurship, I have so many books floating around in my head that I can’t wait to write them. God is good. With a different series, The Seer Series, I was asking God about it. I said, I need a name for the main character. Immediately, I said this name out loud. I thought, hum this is unusual. The name was clet like the sports shoe. I typed it in with a k instead of c and found the name Khalat it means between two different dimensions. Khalit the main character in the series, is a seer, he sees in this dimension, but he also sees like the prophets of old in the invisible realm. There will be four books in this series.
4. Believe in yourself. If you can’t believe in your talent, then how can you expect others to believe in it. If you have an idea research it to the best of your ability and say out loud, “I CAN DO THIS! Why do I say to say it out loud? Because when your ears hear what your lips are saying then you can start to believe, it sets off a change reaction in your body. You start thinking Hum, maybe I can do this, then soon your confidence builds. Words are powerful they ignite. Soon an ember will turn into a full flame when you continually speak something.
5. Never give up. I give this key strongly because it’s easy to give up. Will you make mistakes. Probably but don’t’ give up instead learn from it and go forward. Don’t think of it as a failure, think of it as a learning experience of how not to do something. Thomas Edison tried 2000 times to make a light bulb, but he didn’t think of it as a failure. He said, he found 2000 ways not to make a light bulb.

Book Review “The Chocolatier”

  1. Reviewed by Rabia Tanveer for Readers’ Favorite

The Chocolatier by Brenda Scruggs is a complex yet sweet romance that centers on a man and a woman from very different worlds, yet they are perfect for each other. Charles Riviera is the heir to a chocolate empire that thrives on the dark, rich, sweet intensity of chocolate. He loves his job, he loves chocolate, and he really enjoys working as Director of Marketing. However, he had no idea that life had an even sweeter surprise waiting for him in the form of a delectable woman who is hiding deep pain.

Charlene Callaway has seen the worst that love and romance have to offer. Ready to marry the man she loved, she found him cheating on her with another woman on their wedding day. Broken hearted and bone weary, she moves away and gets a job at a chocolate company. She had no idea that her future was waiting for her in the form of a dashing, handsome and very interesting man. But bad luck still has an eye on her. She has a stalker and he will not stop until he has her. What can Charlene and Charles do in a situation like this? They are hardly ready to accept their feelings for each other, so what will they do when they have to confront an adversary that is hell-bent on claiming Charlene?

Brenda Scruggs did a wonderful job of creating characters that were real and relatable. The element of surprise, romance, and suspense was great and very well built. The scenarios were real, complex and believable. I loved the sweet love between Charlene and Charles, nothing was forced and Scruggs gave them time and the opportunity to fully explore their feelings for each other before they gave love a chance. The Chocolatier is a complete novel that gives you a sense of fulfillment and leaves you smiling.

This is a historical romance series set in the late 1800s.

Welcome to my world of Wellington Cross.  I want you to close your eyes with me and imagine yourself on a plantation on the James River in old Virginia, sitting on a veranda gazing at the billowy boughs of tall oaks and magnolia trees.  Oh, the heat finds you where you are, so see yourself drinking a cup of tea or a mint Julep.  Or take a bottle of Madeira wine and a blanket down by the river and watch the sunset, feeling the warm wet southern breezes against your face and deeply inhale the scent of jasmine so sweet it becomes one with your soul.  This is the world of Wellington Cross, and I want to take you there.  This plantation has more stories than you can imagine.  So many stories, you will need to shoo them away with your hands like lightning bugs.  Sit for a spell and read about a world away from our own and far in the past.  You may just want to stay.
